dinner/lunch

last night i should have been studying for the gre
but it was the debate!
and the project runway finale!
so i didn't, and instead i made another soup
tomatillo/leek/roasted apple/pear soup with shredded chicken
sounds and looks not so tasty
but it's so so tasty.

i love to cook
and one of my favorite things to make is soup
i've been experimenting a lot lately
and this one is my favorite.
it's pureed butternut squash, beets, fennel, and mint
and i put in lots of cayenne pepper and a tiny bit of honey
and wasabi powder
a little of everything, and it actually in the end tastes amazing!
it's this wonderful deep red color* and is very spicy but also sweet.
the best thing about it is that it's so healthy.
there's no butter or oil, and very little salt, just wonderful veggies.
my boyfriend tasted it and he loves it too,
but what he said about it is part of what makes me love him.
he said:
"you know, the reason i love beets is because when i eat them, it's what i imagine grass would taste like when i smell it."
i think he's right!

so the balloon monsters/creatures i saw outside the opening of mad
were by jason hackenwerth.
my boo hates them/is totally grossed out by them
which i understand i guess, but i think they're pretty great.
they looked especially great in the rain outside mad/columbus circle with people hiding in them, making their "wings" flutter.
too bad my camera is pretty much useless - i'll put up the pictures i took on my phone soon.
jason is a scad graduate.

i have got to go to tinsel trading.
my dad's girlfriend mary told me about it when she showed me her textiles, now i'm convinced i have to go, but worried about spending a week's paycheck on metal sequins.
i love metal sequins.

mad

i went to the museum of arts and design yesterday, so excited, like it was christmas!
and then when i got there not only was it raining, but there was a line around the corner.
rats.
there were, however, some pretty spectacular balloon people/monsters outside, which i'll address later today.
so i'll be going back next saturday morning at 11:00 am, opening time.
the last thing i want is to go there when it's totally packed full of people and i can't see anything,
as was my experience at design and the elastic mind.
such a bummer.
but anyway, i'm more than excited
i've always liked the design room (and the lithographs and prints room) at the moma the best,
so i feel like this museum was sort of made for me.
plus i also love the folk art museum, which makes m.a.d even more perfect - i get a strong folk feeling (hello, arts & crafts heaven).
i'm really glad, though not surprised, that tara donovan is included in the second lives exhibition, but i'm especially excited to see stuart haygarth's chandelier in person and also susie macmurray's latex glove dress (above and below), and also el anatsui's work (i love, love, love his piece in the met's masterpieces of modern design) and the campana brothers' creation (here too).
and if the photographs from the nytimes' visit to second lives are any indication of how great it will be, then it's probably going to be a pretty wonderful saturday.

i made this little cloud for annette to take to niger
i used mary's silk ribbon to embroider the mouth
i threaded gold sequins through it and it looked really nice
i also used mary's silk thread to sew the guy together
i wanted annette to have something sparkly and a little glamorous out there in the desert
